From PT Boats Inc. Just too cool...
|
The shot from PTBoats Inc. was made in 1943 using a
boat that had not yet been turned over to the Navy. The location is
the Bayonne waterfront just up from the Elco facility. When looking at
this shot, remember several things:
1) the boat weighs in at 50 tons
2) there are at least two motor macs in the engine room during this little
maneuver
3) look closely at the starboard after deck (about where the 40mm would be
mounted) and see the guy hanging on for dear life

PTF-3

US Naval Historical Center Photos - These are the official captions on the back of
the photos. I don’t think
PTF-3 ever went into the Washington Navy Yard, just to Quantico where the
SecNav and the President’s PT boat buddy Paul B. Fay (now under SecNav),
could see the boat. Originally,
JFK was supposed to make a visit. Supposedly,
scheduling conflicts with the visit from some astronauts cancelled the
visit. I think the navy was
trying to keep the boats somewhat secret and a visit by the PT boat
veteran President to one of the newest PT boats would be a public
relations nightmare if the boat were captured or sunk in Viet Nam.
Funny how stuff like that works out.
